What is STEM? (And no, it’s not a tree branch!))
At its core, STEM is an English acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Sure, we know that in English "stem" also means tree trunk, but let’s skip that part… for now, okay?
The term STEM was coined in 2001 by Judith Ramaley, then Assistant Director for Education and Human Resources at the National Science Foundation (NSF), a U.S. government agency. Before that, the acronym used was SMET, but the letters were rearranged to create a catchier, easier-to-use acronym, especially for promoting integration across these fields. Let’s be honest, "STEM" flows much better.
